MY CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTOR IS SOUNDING, BUT NOTHING SEEMS TO BE WRONG, WHAT SHOULD I DO?

Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas which may not be immediately detectable, but prolonged exposure to CO gas will cause flu like symptoms including nausea, dizziness and headache and can result in death. Phone 911 and a Fire Unit will respond and test for the presence of Carbon Monoxide with a CO Meter. If high levels are detected fire personnel will locate the source, usually a faulty appliance, and secure it. They will attach a DANGER DO NOT OPERATE TAG to the unit. HOW DO I REPORT A FIRE VIOLATION, AND HOW ARE COMPLAINTS OF VIOLATIONS HANDLED BY THE FIRE DEPARTMENT?

Complaints should be called into the Fire Prevention Division , phone 377-7525. Fire Prevention will document the complaint and then assign the inspection to the appropriate fire company or agency . Complaints are handled expeditiously.

 

HOW DO I GET A COPY OF A FIRE REPORT?

The Fire Prevention Division , located at 5-7 New School Street, is open Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Telephone 377-7525

 

WHERE DO I APPLY FOR FIRE DEPARTMENT PERMITS?

The Fire Department requires various permits and/or licensing predicated on the use or sale of potentially hazardous materials and/or liquids within the business community, a partial list is as follows: use or sale of ammunition, explosives, propane, gasoline, kerosene, diesel & fuel oils, paints, refrigerants, oil burner equipment, oil/gas storage tanks & repair shops. Apply at the Combustibles Bureau, 5-7 New School Street, telephone 377-7525.

 

HOW DO I SCHEDULE A FIRE SAFETY INSPECTION?

The Fire Department endeavors to inspect all multiple dwellings (three family and above) and all commercial buildings annually. These inspections are carried out by the local fire station responsible for the district where your property is located. If you have not received an inspection within the past year call Fire Prevention to schedule an inspection.

 

HOW DO I REQUEST A FIRE SAFETY PRESENTATION?

The Fire Department offers fire safety presentations to local schools and civic organizations, appointments are scheduled through the Fire Investigation Unit which can be reached at 377-7516.

 

HOW DO I MAKE A REQUEST TO TOUR A FIRE HOUSE?

Your local Fire Station is open to the public to visit everyday. Should you want to make an appointment for a group visit, please call the local station or call Fire Prevention at 377-7525 for assistance. Keep in mind that there are times when an appointment can not be kept due to the Fire Company being called to an emergency.
