FIRST RESPONDER PROGRAM

AED Call

"I called for an ambulance."

"Why did the Fire Department come?"

WHEN IT COMES TO A MEDICAL EMERGENCY, SECONDS COUNT ! ...................

Seriously injured people need help fast! With this in mind, the City of Yonkers and the Fire Department through the FIRST RESPONDER PROGRAM have developed a way to expedite emergency care to those in need by sending the neighborhood fire company along with the city contracted ambulance.

Because firehouses are strategically located throughout the city, a fire unit can be on the scene within approximately four minutes. This is especially important when a patient is experiencing heart failure or has stopped breathing. Unless medical care is received within four to six minutes, there is little chance for recovery.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS...........................................................................

EMS Call

Upon arrival, specially trained firefighters immediately assess the victims condition and begin providing emergency medical care to the patient. This care may include Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), administering oxygen, bleeding control, or even emergency childbirth. And now with the implementation of the YFD's new Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) program firefighters can administer a life saving shock to a victim of sudden cardiac arrest.  Once the ambulance arrives, patient care is transferred to paramedics who provide advanced life support. Yonkers firefighters remain on the scene to assist the paramedics as needed.

SAVING LIVES IS PART OF A FIREFIGHTER’S JOB............................................................................

The Yonkers Fire Department is a municipal agency ready to respond around the clock whenever an emergency occurs.

Whenever there is a fire, people expect the Fire Department to come. However, every firefighter is trained in a wide variety of life saving and rescue skills. This enables the department to respond to many types of non-fire emergencies such as medically related incidents.

YOUR FIRE DEPARTMENT IS ALSO SPECIALLY TRAINED TO HANDLE ......................................
